Veron and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic

March 22 - 29, 2008
Trip Leader: Laurie Chaikin, OD

There were 10 students who accompanied me, Laurie, from UC Berkeley. We saw 668 patients over the course of 4 days. 2 days were spent seeing the employees of the Punta Cana resort, the last 2 in the town of Veron. We brought about 2000 pairs of glasses with us, and dispensed to approximately 60% of the patients. This was a new mission, and our host was the Biodiversity Center of Punta Cana. The founder, Ted Kheel and his nephew Jake started a small medical clinic for the town, as well as the biodiversity center, and a coastal reef protection project. It was overall a great experience.
